Comedian Lenny Bruce satirized the advertisement—and seems rather cavalierly to poke fun at our core ethic of volunteerism—in one of his most famous sketches (at 1:25) The sketch was featured in the first episode of the Amazon hit series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” We can’t agree with it, it’s an important part of our cultural history.
