Certified Crisis Response Canines

In May 2020, Seattle Mountain Rescue (SMR) expanded its commitment to team resiliency by integrating Certified Crisis Response Canines into its operations. These highly trained dogs are recognized members of the unit, supporting not only mission outcomes but also the mental and emotional well-being of our volunteers and the communities we serve.

Search and rescue missions often unfold in high-stress, emotionally complex environments. By incorporating crisis response canines, SMR acknowledges that peak performance in the field depends on more than technical skill and physical endurance—it requires care for the whole person. These dogs are trained to provide calm, comfort, and connection during moments of uncertainty, grief, and/or fatigue—similar to programs led by organizations like HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response.

Pickles and Bungee were the first crisis response canines to join the SMR team, and they quickly became an integral part of our culture. Whether sitting quietly with family members awaiting news of a loved one, offering a grounding presence during debriefs, or lifting spirits after long missions, the impact of these working dogs was profound. Their legacy continues to shape this program, even as we remember them after their passing.

Ruffles was introduced to the team as a puppy in January 2021 and quickly captured the hearts of members. Through dedicated training and countless hours alongside the team, Ruffles became a certified crisis response canine in 2023. Today, Ruffles carries forward the important role of providing comfort, connection, and emotional support to both rescuers and those impacted by our missions.

Certified Crisis Response Canines play a vital role in supporting SMR’s mission—ensuring that while we work tirelessly so everyone comes home from the backcountry, we also care for those who answer the call.

Support the Canine Program

Our crisis response canines—and their handlers—require specialized training, certification, ongoing care, and equipment to remain mission-ready. Crisis response dog training takes not only time and effort, but costs for classes and certification. As an all-volunteer organization, Seattle Mountain Rescue relies on community support to sustain and grow this unique and impactful program.

Your donation helps:

  • Train and certify new crisis response canine teams
  • Provide ongoing care, equipment, and readiness support
  • Expand emotional and mental health resources for rescuers and families

Help us continue this work.
